REMAX EUROPEAN LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006
RE/MAX LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP OF SCOTLAND 2006
2ND JULY 2006
FORRESTER PARK RESORT, DUNFERMLINE, SCOTLAND
Thunder In The Highlands
On a weekend of disappointment for English soccer fans, Londoner Adam Stacey showed why he is number three in the World and is the one to beat in this year’s RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship with a fantastic display of driving at this weekend’s Scottish round.
Thunder and lightning were present all day at Forrester Park Resort, Dunfermline, Scotland and the large entry had to brave torrential rain for much of the day. On a landing area that sloped towards the tee, meaning the competition would be more of a test of pure carry; Stacey blasted one of his first set of Pinnacles over 359 metres (393 yards)!
There were many players new to the sport of long driving. In particular, home-based professional, Daryn Cochrane (281m, 308yds) and local Ben Mackie (285m, 312yds) were impressive in poor conditions. As a bonus, two local young juniors, Alexander McDonald and Sean Pagan were tempted to give it a go. Alexander hit a magnificent 234 metres (256 yds) and Sean, who was little taller than his driver, a great 180 metres (197 yds).
Most of the international tour players made it through the opening rounds and the semi-finals had very few of the top drivers missing. Richard Allen, who works for Pinnacles parent company, Acushnet, was making a very strong showing in what was his first long drive event of the RE/MAX Championship. He breezed through his first round and semi with drives all over 312 metres (341 yds) but perhaps pressure told in the final where he blasted out of bounds.
It was left to the best Scottish long driver and veteran of the European tour, Rowan Myles to overcome what was for him a typical Scottish summer’s day and take third place in the final. This was narrowly topped by the huge Janos Uotilla from Finland, who took second, and the awesome Adam Stacey, who captured his first national title of the season.
The tour now travels to Sweden for the next national round followed by events in England, Holland and Ireland.
