REMAX EUROPEAN LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006

RE/MAX SPANISH LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP 2006
17 & 18 JUNE 2006
LA MANGA, SPAIN

Swede Tumba Shines in the Sun

The fabulous resort of La Manga was the setting for the first round of this year’s RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship and big crowds turned out for the two-day spectacle.

Day One saw the qualifying rounds and the opportunity for newcomers to the sport to have a go in a national event. It was also the chance for the established players to flex their muscles after a long winter lay-off. This is exactly what World Number Three, Adam Stacey, did, blasting a new Pinnacle Gold Long Drive ball to the furthest anyone would reach at 370 metres (over 404 yards)! There were many new converts to the sport on this first day. These included two fifteen year-old Spaniards, Pablo Monteagudo and Sergio Barba, who were regularly hitting over 310 metres (340 yards).

Day Two saw a change in the breeze to a stiff head wind and the previous day’s lengths were not going to be bettered. This is where things got serious and the large crowd who had gathered were in for some spectacular driving.

The Senior’s division was one of the best supported on the tour and at the finish it was newcomer, Richard Greenough from Yorkshire, who narrowly beat La Manga resident, Robert Holland, by just 5 metres.

In the Ladies division it came down to the last ball of the competition, as Swiss Heidi Wiss out drove Finland’s Nora Westerback by the even smaller margin of three metres.

A tense Open Division saw England’s Daniel Konyk and Finland’s Janos Uotilla both struggling to find their usual consistency. Even the usually cool Adam Stacey was feeling the pressure and could not capture his previous days huge lengths. It was left to the Swedish veteran, Johan Tumba and current RE/MAX European Champion, Joe Miller to scrap for the first prize. Johan (339 meters, 370 yards) eventually came out on top by 5 metres.

The players were all unanimous in their praise for the event. The setting was magnificent, thanks to the staff and officials at La Manga. The weather was beautiful and, thanks to the efforts of Rupert Gehmacher at RE/MAX La Manga to establish the event at very short notice, the large number of spectators and competitors enjoyed a fantastic competition.
