REMAX EUROPEAN LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006
RE/MAX LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP OF SWEDEN 2006
29TH JULY 2006
INTERNATIONAL GOLF CLUB, HERRESTA, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
Results from Sweden
A record field turned up for the third round of the RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship at the beautiful new course of Herresta, just outside Stockholm. It was even more encouraging to see that many of the players were new to the spectacular sport of long driving.
On a near perfect grid with very little roll, due to overnight rain, distances were never going to be massive. However, the largest crowd of the season saw some impressive driving and the closest competition of the year in all three divisions.
In the morning’s qualification series many of the top players struggled and most just made it through to the knockout stage by the smallest of margins. Chief among these were Adam Stacey, who struggled to find the grid, as did Finland’s Janos Uotila. Indeed Stacey only succeeded in booking his afternoon slot thanks to the generosity of Johan Tumba, who gave Stacey one of his tee times so that he could re-hit.
In the Ladies division current RE/MAX European Champion, Jessica Wallstrom looked in the best of form and was driving as powerfully and as consistently as ever. Indeed, even with the pressure applied by fellow Swede, Camilla Colleen (235 metres, 257 yds) she came through with a superb 249 metres (273 yds)
A great field of Seniors, many of whom were first-timers, saw father of regular Open competitor, Mikael Lindblom, Hans Lindblom hit 263 metres for third place. This was narrowly beaten by another father of an Open player, Roland Andersson (266m) for second and newcomer Roland Rapp with 267m (292 yds).
In the Open Division competition was even tighter, with rookies battling with the established stars. The final saw drives separated by only a few metres. Stacey edged out Marcus Edblad by one metre for third and this was beaten by Mikael Lindblom by three metres for second. Mika thought he had the title sewn up with his best drive of 334m (365 yds) until the next and final competitor, newcomer Alexander Lantz from Sweden bombed 336m (368 yds) with his second ball to take the crown and 15,000 SEK prize purse.
All in all this was a great event. Thanks to Joakim Sabel from the International Golf Club, Herresta and to Goran Pagrot and Ulf Ericsson of RE/MAX Sweden for their support.
